Photographer Comment: I saw a picture of this place in a Life magazine around 1952 or so. It was in Black and white. There was a small spit of land connecting it to the mainland and that was only dry during the low tide so that the monks could walk to the village for supplies. When I actually got there decades later there was a 4 lane highway leading to the built up area with lots of parking plots and such. It was an overcast day and no water close up at all. Needless to say I was very disappointed, so I decided to take it upon myself to work the image into what I had thought that I would have seen during a sunlit day at high tide..
