Very cute!  The only thing I miss in shade like this are catchlights in her eyes.  Was there any possible way to have her in the shade but with light in her eyes? 

I love this picture, though.

They're there, but they're small.  I looked at the original and I can see them.

Lovely picture (not sure how I came to miss this topic  ). I can see a little 'sparkle' in her eyes, but maybe you might be able to get an even better one by using a reflector? It is already very nice though, as a parent, I would love it  .

I've never used a reflector before, I'm not sure how that would work or not...any suggestions?  Tips?

If there is sunlight (or other light that can be 'bounced back' you could place it where you can catch the light and bounce it back into the eyes of your subject, very simple and schematic (as far as possible without a drawing):

I see...but since she was in the shade I'm not sure how that would work.  I was standing in the shade with her under a huge tree.  And would the reflector affect her skin tone or create shadows?

If you can not 'catch' any light whatsoever, it's no use bringing a reflector though.

Nice composition and colour.  The reflector would just brighten her face a bit, but if you don't have someone there working the reflector or a stand it can be a bit tricky.  As far as the catch lights go...you can always emphasize them later in post processing?
