Learning Macro the POOR MANS way

This is new to me, wanting to learn about reversing rings or stacking lenses. I was reading in the book "MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY" from Photo Workshop by HAJE JAN KAMPS.
I am using a Canon EOS Rebel XS using a 18 - 55 mm lense. Also attaching a Vivitar Series 1 10XMACRO Lens 58 mm. I got some really great photos from flowers in my front yard but I really want to be able to get close enough without spending tons of money for the really expensive Macro lenses. If anyone can give me some advise on how to using these attachment lenses.
