I guess it depends on what you want to photograph.  I have a Panasonic Lumix 635Z - one of the types that attempts to provide the functionality of a DSLR but with a single lens.  It works okay but struggles to get a shallow depth of field.

I started with a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS moved up to a Canon Rebel XSi and now I own a Canon EOS 60D. So I'm thinking Canon's are my favourite cameras! Grin

I have had my Canon EOS Rebel T1i for over a year now and just love it. My previous cameras were Kodaks.
