Chap 2 Assignment : use of flash

Canon G11 integrated flash. Adjustment level -1 just to balance the contre-jour and give highlights to the marble.
I couldn't find any situation where the author's advice to 'blast a bunch of light' into an already bright scene did anything except wash out the foreground.

Hi Ati....it is me again. Not sure which PhotoWorkShop book you are working with. Is it is Lighting? You only mentioned Chap 2 Assignment.
Are we talking about "fill" lighting? If so you can read about here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_light
Again check the Web on fill lighting photography.
Keep in mind that most....if not all built-in flash are almost most like "shinning" a flashlight at a subject. Soooo! I would recommend that when the time is right....get you an external flash. I think they make one for the Canon G series. The external will give you much more control of the lighting. You can also acquire a "diffuser" from various vendors that fits the "shoe" on your camera and defuses the flash.
I have one of these that works very well. Here is the site: http://www.garyfongestore.com/flash-accessories/puffer-pop-up-flash-diffuser.html
