Sept 18th – 26th with yours truly.

Western Crete is able to astound the visitor more than other parts of the island, and Chania Town, with its labyrinth of Venetian and Turkish alleyways, has the most picturesque harbour in Greece. As a long time resident here, let me reveal the many hidden facets of this fascinating area.

I based this song on Eric Clapton and Sting's song, Probably Me, from Lethal Weapon soundtrack. I wasn't sure how to capture that with one photo, so this montage was produced by combining two different photos, one of someone's eye and another was Zippo lighter and mixed in Photoshop CS5. As this was a macro assignment, I took both pictures using 3 close-up filters stacked together, using my Canon EF-S lenses and Canon EOS 7D.
Zippo was featured a lot in the music video for this song, and I added the eye to imply someone watching over you.

The second one I attached today is similar, but I have edited it in Photoshop CS5: added a black and white layer with selective colour and lowered the opacity.
Both photos were taken with three close-up filters stacked together.
Exposure reading for the second one:
ISO 100, f/4.5, 0.8 sec

Chances are that regardless of what type or brand of digital camera you own, it is packed with a selection of scene modes and one of those modes is a Sports/Action mode. For this assignment, find a fast-moving subject and use the Sports/Action mode to get some action-stopping photographs. You’ll find challenging subjects all around you, from the local youth soccer league to the kids at the skateboard park. Remember to look for the peak of action and don’t get frustrated — it takes a lot of near misses to get a few great shots.

For this assignment, I visited the local seawall on Long Island Sound to see if I could stop the windsurfers’ incredible fast action. I used a 70-300mm Nikkor zoom lens and put my dSLR in the Action mode, which automatically chose the top available shutter speed for the relatively dim existing light of a cloudy day. I boosted the ISO to 1250 to get a faster shutter speed. But even shooting at 1/640 second, it was tough keeping windsurfer Mike Colombo sharply focused. To make it simpler, I waited until he was coming right at me to shoot. It’s always easiest to stop action coming toward you or going away from you. Taken at ISO 1250, f/6.3, 1/640 second.

Hi
I recently purchased the book and I'm still on chapter one. Here's my first attempts at assignment 1 Chapter One: Candies. I'd would appreciate any feedback. Thanks

I covered a lot of ground quickly in this chapter to get you familiar with all the kinds of light that affect the color and contrast in your images. For this assignment, you get to pick the light for your subject. You can take a high- or low-contrast photo. You can take the picture indoors or outdoors, in full light or low light. It’s up to you. The only instruction is to make note of all the elements that go into the photo that you choose to upload to photoworkshop.com. What kind of light are you dealing with? Do you need to adjust the white balance? What are your shutter speed, ISO, and aperture settings? Do you have to adjust any of them to accommodate the amount of light? When you upload the photo, share with everyone all that you can about how you took your image.

I really like working with light as a reflection. So, to complete this assignment, I decided to photograph the graphic shape of the St. Louis Arch. It becomes totally different when you get a different angle and use the light and shadow to maximize the color. In this case, the Arch is in its own shadow, so it is blue, and the sky on this bright sunny day is also blue. The sun behind the arch gives a glow that separates the subject from the background. Using a wide angle lens on a compact digital camera, the exposure was ISO 200 at 1/640 second at f/7.1 with the exposure compensation set to –1/3 to really get the blue nice and rich in color.
