Title: Chpt 1 assignment - my style
Post by: kellymdempewolf on December 28, 2011, 11:09:58 PM
I posted my first photo shoot (not paid...practice with a friend's child) on my new photography blog...I think it shows and describes the style I'm striving for.

Any and all comments and suggestions welcome!

Thanks, Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Did you want to post your photo here or perhaps put a link to your photography blog into the post?

Cheers,

Malcolm

Holy cow...can't believe I forgot the link!  I went up and modified the original post, but here it is, too.  Thanks!

You have some nice candid and posed shots on your blog.  How did you and Laura think the photos turned out?  Are you happy with them all or are there ones you'd like to improve on?

I think I was pleased overall.  I think Laura was wanting more posed-and-smile pics and she got some cute ones like that.  I didn't do any talking to her ahead of time about what kind of pics I'd be taking...she just said she was headed to take pics at our girls' dance studio and asked if I wanted to join them because she knew I was wanting some practice time.  I'll definitely talk to clients before a shoot and make sure they know the style I'm going for - the more candid or casual-posed pics...it would definitely help the number of times that "stop doing that and smile nice please" is said during the shoot if they know that's not really what I'm going for.  I don't want them to "stop doing that!"

I definitely would improve on the lighting.  I was returning a vivitar speedlite as it stopped syncing with my TTL the 3rd time I used it and my canon speedlite was due to be delivered the next day.  And I didn't want to use my pop-up flash because I don't like the light. So I was stuck with the kind-of funky dance studio lighting, which sometimes pushed my ISO higher than I would have liked!

I think overall I need to get to the point where I'm comfortable enough with my camera (I just got this one a few weeks ago) and the settings that I'm much quicker at adjusting and changing since the style of photo-shoot I'm going for most definitely does not afford "camera fiddle" time.

Thanks for looking at them!

Sounds like you know what you're wanting to improve.  Getting to know your camera well is definitely a must for candid shots so you can change the settings on the fly.

Are you doing any post processing with your photos?  That might allow you to use a higher ISO and remove some of the noise a bit later.
