Title: Chapter 4 Assignment - Manipulating the Light Post by: JCAus22 on December 15, 2011, 03:10:22 AM For this assignment I've gone for Rim/Back lighting of my little girl who is so close to taking those first steps but not quite there yet. I am very happy with the results. I've posted 2 images, one colour and one B&W. I love the sun rays pouring down in the colour shot and I think I got the rim light ok. Once again, I hope to practice and post some more from this chapter as there were a lot of other manipulating lighting techniques I'm keen to try. I am so enjoying this book, I'm really getting out trying new things whereas in the past I stuck with what I knew - only photographed when the conditions were right. This book is teaching me heaps about being able to capture a photo at any time with some practice and knowledge!

One thing that helps with backlighting is a reflector to reflect light back on to your subject's faces. Gold and silver combinations are the most basic ones and they're relatively inexpensive. If you enjoy the backlighting effect you should think about getting some.
On a side note, there's a general rule that I've come across with taking photos of people and chopping off limbs. In your first shot you've just missed your daughter's hand while in the second shot you might want to crop your photo off at just above the elbow for a better look.
