Title: Chapter 4 Assignment - Manipulating The Light
Post by: goldcoastgolfer on October 30, 2011, 01:27:19 PM
I have to admit to cheating on this shot.  I was playing with some of the scene modes - specifically the 'Child portrait' mode which fired the flash off.  However I thought this shot had some interesting contrasts with the sun in the background and the shadows created offset by the flash.

Taken handheld with a Nikon D7000 and a Sigma 17-70mm lens:

Focal Length: 46mm (69mm in 35mm format)
Exposure: 1/250
F Number: f/9
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 100
Exposure Bias: 0

This is one where I attempted to do the 'halo' effect with the sun coming off my daughter's face.  I think if she had her face turned a bit more towards the sun the effect would have been better.

Taken handheld with a Nikon D7000 and a Sigma 17-70mm lens:

Focal Length: 17mm (25mm in 35mm format)
Exposure: 1/250
F Number: f/5.6
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 360
Exposure Bias: 0

And a third one - again the flash fired off because of the scene mode I was in.  I can't help but wonder what the photo would have been like without it... I think I would have some better contrasts around my son's face if the flash hadn't fired.

Taken handheld with a Nikon D7000 and a Sigma 17-70mm lens:

Focal Length: 55mm (82mm in 35mm format)
Exposure: 1/250
F Number: f/5.6
White Balance: Auto
ISO: 110
Exposure Bias: 0

Missing the halo picture of your daughter (2nd photo). When in the auto modes such as "portraits"and the flash goes off, you have no control. What I would do is try a portrait mode then try a manual mode with the same settings as portrait but shut off the flash and see what happens. Compare the two pictures and see what lighting effect you would get.

Ah - thanks for letting me know.  I think we're even now :D

These photos were for an assignment in the Exposure book and it was to use the scene modes so I guess it helps to understand what the camera's attempting to do and what the limitations of the different.  I haven't had a chance to find some interesting light yet with the kids so I'll probably add a few more later as I find something interesting.
