Photographer's Comment: For the Look up, down all around topic. Post flood damage of a railroad bridge shot around sunset. They parked these train cars on the bridge filled with sand. The thought was they would help hold down the bridge. Ooops Just thought this was something you don't see everyday. GOAL with this image.....The floods were a tragic situation, and the damage estimates are already into a couple billion. Things like this situation still exist all around town, mostly because of other priorities. But the spirit of the people overall is very upbeat. Most look at it as a chance at a new beginning. So the GOAL was even though this is a bad situation, I wanted to show that now matter how bad a situation can be, good things can come out of it. The old every cloud has a silver lining thing. Also this was my first attempt at HDR which was fun to experiment with. Carl

By smokeydawg (2008-07-17 22:37:05 ): Thanks for taking the time to comment Jerry. Actually you are closest to what I intended with this image, this was a two fold image, first it was my first HDR image...I used 5 exposures to get the final image in Photomatix. 2nd the colors did make the situation more bearable, kind of like the old saying, "every cloud has a silver lining" type thing. Thx again, Carl

By clwhitney (2008-07-15 02:34:43 ): Beautiful colors in the wreckage Carl. The natural light creates warm colors on the structures and a dramatic sky to contrast the colors of the train. The leading lines and textures of the tracks pull me into the image also.
By LindaJames (2008-07-14 18:41:29 ): Incredible photo. So beautiful, created from tragedy. Love the color and your POV.
By janith (2008-07-14 02:11:54 ): Nice perspective, gorgeous colors, sad story...
By grovester (2008-07-14 00:14:13 ): Its interesting how you are using colors to provide some healthy distance from a horrific and tragic situation to make it more bearable. Was the straight version of the photo any less powerful? Very well done.
By Atle (2008-07-13 17:06:14 ): Didn’t read your comment before after posting my last comment. It’s of course tragic what has happen. But my main point is that this isn’t something one see everyday and a good take on the assignment!
By Atle (2008-07-13 16:58:02 ): Carl, did you do that? Grin! Like this photo, like you have couth a moment. Guess it doesn’t look like this tomorrow!☺
By whitewavesPTP (2008-07-13 12:19:46 ): Not only are the colors surreal, the image is. Your eyes can not quite believe what they are seeing. As CJ said it is a good thing you are taking these photos. You might want to save them and think of a book in the future. People are scurrying around trying to put their lives back in order right now, but some day they will want to say "Look at this, I was there................."
By CJGroth (2008-07-13 11:12:02 ): Like the leading line from the railroad track to the railcars. The colors are surreal. You know, Carl, it is good you are shooting the aftermath of this. You think you will never forget these things that are beyond belief, but they do fade and your vision of them will remain in your powerful photos.
By somagni (2008-07-13 10:15:29 ): I'd say that is a bit of a wrinkle that needs to be ironed out! Nice color and lighting on a devastating situation.
By sonoranhawk (2008-07-13 00:13:34 ): Too bad about the bridge, but this picture has some great composition, light and colors. Especially like the low POV with the rails leading up to the cars
