By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 19:06:20 ): Thanks for taking the time to comment and the suggestions are well taken. I thought about what you said before I posted it, but at the time I took the shot, lets just say I was in awe and wasn't thinking technically when I took the shot. LoL that's why I wouldn't make a good editorial photographer. I need to learn to use those emotions. This was my city of almost 12 years, and I've gotten rather attached to this place, it was heartbreaking to see all the destruction first hand. But the people here are strong and are allready talking about a better Cedar Rapids in the future. :) Carl

By Jim915 (2008-06-20 14:57:11 ): Carl - I think this would be more effective as a documentary piece if the POV was lower and you use a wide angle so that the water appeared to stretch out to infinity. Then the lines leading into the water would be more powerful because the symbolism would be stronger.

By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 13:22:04 ): Thanks Dorothy, you're a gem! Carl

By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 13:21:12 ): Thanks Linda, so far so good with the sun, we really needed it. Carl

By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 13:20:37 ): Thank you Jan! Carl

By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 13:20:11 ): Thanks for the kind words Maureen. LoL, don't think I would make it working for media, I just have a hard time photographing people at their lows. There were some great opportunities when the clean up started, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Carl

By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 13:16:19 ): Thanks Katia. Carl

By smokeydawg (2008-06-20 13:15:45 ): Thanks CJ. Carl

By EnterVortex (2008-06-20 04:46:48 ): It is like the road just runs into the sea. Nice placement of the double yellow lines. Good use of the harsh light to emphasize the depth of the water on the road by accentuating the waves. So sorry about the disaster.

By NowYesNow (2008-06-18 22:51:03 ): I'm guessing it All looks a little harsh, to you, at this time? The elements (pardon the pun, here?) I like in this photo, given the circumstances, are the bits of detritus and the relentless diamond backed wavelet pattern nipping at the immovable, but still inundated, vertical yellow stripes. Those stribes are symbols of the rule of law, as it were, but the river? ...she ain't inclined to obey those, right now.. so they are more like emergency symbols. It's not a dramatic image, but it does carry the message, at least while we know and remember current (I didn't even see that pun coming, I swear) events. Whatever else is in store, I know you'll play it smart, Carl, but you'll play it!

By ktapio (2008-06-18 16:27:23 ): This is the correct way and the better way… thanks Jan… Great image Carl the movement and light is so well balanced… it is so effective I just wish it was not taken under these circumstances… katia

By CJGroth (2008-06-18 16:21:52 ): What a telling photo, so simple yet powerful.

By maureenyoung52 (2008-06-18 13:35:57 ): Carl, Your pictures are soooo much better than what has been shown in the newspapers or on the television. To bad you don't work for the newspapers.

By Isachsen (2008-06-18 07:29:13 ): Carl, the message is crystal clear here - and what a wonderful editorial shot.

By LindaJames (2008-06-18 03:00:49 ): I hope the water keeps going down and the sun keeps shining. I really like this image, beautifully composed.

By whitewavesPTP (2008-06-18 01:16:26 ): Another amazing shot. At first it is diffucult to understand, then it is very sad.

By janith (2008-06-18 00:12:39 ): Powerful documentary photo, Carl. Given what you're experiencing these days, this shot says so much, so simply. I think it's quite appropriate that the water is murky brown rather than blue...

By Scepter (2008-06-17 22:40:45 ): Hey Carl, the preview of your photo looks particularly well juxtaposed with CJ's (which is also a ripply shot). A view of the road that looks like a shot of a beach... that's harsh, for sure. Still, if I was near this lake I'd go looking for a flat, smooth stone so I could send it skipping down the street. Nice comp! -- Frank
