Photographer's Comment: Another shot from last weekend. I know - the house is dead-center in the frame, but I think it works because all the 'action' is in the upper left quarter of the frame. Comments & Critiques welcome!

By WIAUNTBEE (2008-05-16 00:18:41 ): I love the DOF on this one. The house in the center works fine as it seems that the sky is the subject. The tree and the sun behind it work with the 1/3's rule. The drama in the sky is fantastic.

By JayBPhotography (2008-05-11 02:58:19 ): I think the centered house works well for me because it wasn't my focal point in the image... it was more of a bonus, if you will. The sun was definitely what drew my attention and I think the action surrounding it makes the shot. I love the color tones and the lighting... especially the exposure of the clouds. Great shot!
By HangGlider (2008-05-10 02:23:11 ): Thanks for the feedback Michael! I appreciate your comments.
By sonoranhawk (2008-05-09 23:07:37 ): A great picture. Love the sky in this, I think the house in the center works well.
By HangGlider (2008-05-09 12:42:02 ): Hi Carl,
There were 5 exposures, 2-stops apart. Obviously I should have gone to 6 or 7 to get a better defined solar disk. The wind was blowing hard though, and it's really tough to keep that many images perfectly registered. HDR can be a pain, but I like the results I'm getting.
By smokeydawg (2008-05-09 12:36:49 ): Beautifully done. Gonna have to try HDR one of these days. How many exposures you got in this?
By HangGlider (2008-05-09 12:29:26 ): Thanks Warren. I really debated the centering business - but it just 'felt' right to center the house. I took other shots with the more traditional 'rule-of-thirds' comp, but they don't have the stark feeling that this one does. I appreciate your comments!
By HangGlider (2008-05-09 12:26:49 ): Thank you Ian. The 'burned-out' sun/clouds are a problem. I think I'll re-shoot this before too long and see what I can do about getting a better exposure. I appreciate the feedback.
By HangGlider (2008-05-09 12:23:02 ): Thanks Moira! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I just looked through your portfolio... Wow have you got an eye! There are some great images there.
By HangGlider (2008-05-09 12:15:37 ): Hi Vincent (or do you prefer Vince?),
Thanks for taking the time to comment! Glad you like the image. I agree with you re: more foreground. Unfortunately I was standing by the side of the road - there wasn't much more foreground to get! :-)
No filters, no Photoshop. Just HDR tonemapping.
By vf3 (2008-05-09 11:14:15 ): Stunning image and I think you nailed it pretty well. I would have liked a little more foreground. The focal point is in the upper left third is just where I like it. Did you use filters on the camera or did you use Photoshop to get the drama?
By mo (2008-05-09 10:08:42 ): I like it very much- I think the centered comp works well here with the wide angle feel of the sky directing focus toward the house. love the muted colours and the soft starkness.
By leachy (2008-05-09 06:02:10 ): hey arlin. this is a stunning image.the "sun" might be a little bit too bright for my liking, but that is probably how you wanted it. well done.
By KF4sign (2008-05-09 03:02:15 ): I can easily ignore the "rules" for this one, I really like it as is. And I think it has good balance because of the highlight on the grasses in the center and the object "opposite" the action in the right foreground. - Warren
