Watchin' th' Freesia Flow

Photographer's Comment: This is one more from a series on a declining bouquet I received more than a couple of weeks ago, now. I have revisited them pretty much daily, since. I liked a sense of the fallen petals "floating" in the reflection of the dresser top. Lighting was by a single unmodified Nikon SB600, tethered off-camera.

By NowYesNow (2008-01-05 17:51:01 ): Thank you, Katia. The light for this shot is from a single off-camera flash, Nikon SB600, aimed straight down into the "vase" (really a beer mug!). I believe it may have been slightly angled toward the rear, and perhaps I had the flash's diffusion panel in place for a little more spread. The reflection is strong because the light in the vase is stronger than the ambient light falling on the surface of the dresser, letting it be a dark midtone, rather than a well-lit white. Some Photoshop editing helped me intensify the colors in the glass and reflection, while maintaining a soft cool color for the surface. Some of the floating effect comes from a visual principle used by landscape painters --reds advance, blues recede. The warm colored petals seem to come toward you, while the blue of the surface seems to move away. The reflection looks different from the base of the mug because the reflected portion you see is higher up, above where the floral stems cross.

Please, can you explain where is the light coming from and nature of the light in the room in general? The vase base looks different then the reflection? katia
