By smokeydawg (2007-12-21 15:07:55 ): Thanks CJ for commenting and the kind words. Shot in studio using two lights, key was 3x5 ft softbox at camera left at 5.6 / 125, there was a rim light shot through a grid above and right rear of squash set at 3.5, I wanted it to be subtle. I didn't get a chance last week to do any rim lighting so I wanted to try and include that this week. It was shot at 5.6. On the crop, I have about 10 or 12 shots of this with several different crops, I cropped some off the btm on this one to make it an 8x10 crop. I liked this one just because with the 8x crop it put the peppers top "contact" at the lower right thirds intersection and liked the balance it had with the S curve on the squash. PS work was 8x crop, a teeny bit of sharpening using Lucis Wyeth Filter, a small curves adj., and framing.

By smokeydawg (2007-12-21 14:38:30 ): Thanks Gary.

By smokeydawg (2007-12-21 14:37:26 ): Thanks Jan, Your kind words mean a lot. The only way I could get the pepper to stand up was to lean it against the squash, then I went hmmmm and leaned the squash in also. Thanks again.

By CJGroth (2007-12-21 12:21:14 ): Hi Carl -- I think you're getting better and better. What a sweet idea, I love how they lean into each other, and the lighting is great. Because this is so good, I think it would be perfect if everything were shifted to the right to include a bit more of the pepper -- not the whole thing, but just a bit. I only say this because otherwise it's wonderful. Technical question -- Do you have a rimlight on the squash or did you lighten the right edge in PS?

By gary2 (2007-12-20 16:58:04 ): Outstanding. Beautiful lighting. What more is there to say.

By Isachsen (2007-12-20 09:40:02 ): To add a few words to my earlier comments about "good and lovely," I will say that by not having the two "model friends" stand straight, you have achived a great effect making this photo go all the way to the top of the pops. Just plain wonderful!

By smokeydawg (2007-12-19 16:41:32 ): Thanks Deborrah!

By smokeydawg (2007-12-19 16:40:34 ): Thanks Joan, the bg is just a black alternative bg from Backdrop Outlet. It's about 10x20 ft and was really inexpensive and works great.

By CamGram (2007-12-19 11:47:45 ): Carl, the colors, angles and lighting are just perfect. What did you use as a background to get it so uniformly BLACK?

By deborrah (2007-12-19 02:34:07 ): Love the color and the personality. very fun! I'm lost in holiday life and probably won't be able to submit this week or next..sniff-sniff!

By vinedresser (2007-12-18 02:54:37 ): I like what you did with this picture. It works for me very well.

By ezisafra (2007-12-18 02:28:08 ): Beautiful picture

By KBittancourt (2007-12-18 02:26:23 ): Nicely done. I like the presentation very much. Who would have thought a squash & pepper could be elegant and refined. :)

By karmal (2007-12-18 01:55:43 ): Creative fun. I like the composition with the veggies in a tilted position, which gave them an emotional charge. Carlos

By rogercharette (2007-12-17 23:43:49 ): I really like this shot,Great composition simple and to the point..maybe a little reflection from the right side good work

By dawnschubert (2007-12-17 21:34:35 ): This is so fun and colorful. They really do look like friends, this picture makes me smile. Nice work as usual!

By grovester (2007-12-17 15:55:48 ): I agree that this is a really nice image. My only reservation is that the subjects are sitting low in the frame and feel as though they are falling, but maybe that balances against the upward thrust of the two intimates.

By smokeydawg (2007-12-17 15:28:10 ): Not a problem Jan, I agree with you. People have been slacking a bit on leaving comments lately. But then again, I'm giving up on leaving comments this morning because this site is REALLY dragging today, so guess I will come back later, I don't have 5 minutes per image to spare right now to leave comments. Thats about how long its been averaging for me this morning, trying but need to get some cooperation from the site today.

By KF4sign (2007-12-17 15:19:51 ): Beautiful-I especially like the way the reflected light emphasizes the curvature of the veggies. The leaning does have that human quality of snuggling up for closeness.-Warren

By Isachsen (2007-12-17 14:14:19 ): I mistakenly wrote this looking like it is written to critisize you in person, but that was not the intention. I just wanted to tell this to all members, hopefully to get more comments from particpating members. That's all (grin).

By Isachsen (2007-12-17 13:00:41 ): Carl, this is just so lovely. I like it very much!

By somagni (2007-12-17 11:03:09 ): Wonderful! You have given these inanimate objects such personality with your composition and lighting

By Isachsen (2007-12-17 10:46:11 ): As this is an exercise, for some strange reason without any judges or instructors, we (the members) have to pull together and carry out this very valuable exercise. For everyone to get most out of this workout we have to be willing to share our comments on fellow participants pictures. At least - as I have mentioned a few times – if you care about other members commenting on your own pictures – then just look in the mirror and ask yourself if you have given other members the same courtesy. If the answer is no, then don’t expect them to do the same for you. As important as shooting and posting the work may be, to take a few minutes every day and look at the photos and give comments to other participants is equally important. We’ll all benefit from it!
