By smokeydawg (2007-11-07 15:37:56 ): I really like the composition in this, it does tell a good story, and love the placment of the guy against the tree. My only comment is about the darks on the guy, and the separation Jim talked about. It just seems dark there to me. I would bring up the darks on just him or even try some dodging, don't need much, just enough to bring him out a bit more especially in the areas talked about. The devil is in the details. Strong image, but could be stronger.

You are right about the contrast between the coat and top of the leg, may be editing in Photoshop element is not as good as Photoshop it self or even EOS digital photo professional the program that comes with 30D cameras. It has a powerful curves corrections. katia

By Jim915 (2007-11-07 00:23:35 ): I like the composition in general. The man is placed in a strong position within the frame. Also the rock wall being on the diagonal is a strong compositional element. The thing about the composition that bothers me is the cut off foot. I think the blacks are blocked up resulting in a loss of shadow detail in the hat, shirt, the rifle butt and his right arm. In fact, the arm and rifle butt seem to merge together. Bring up the shadows would also reduce the contrast between the inside of his coat and the hot area on the top of his bent leg. I also think the DOF is just a bit to shallow. I would like to see better sharpness on the wall.
