About Aaron Packard:
After spending four years in the US Navy, I studied photography at the University of South Dakota’s School of Fine Arts, during which time I was a photographer and then photo editor for the University’s news paper The Volante. The Volante, now integrated with the Al Neuharth Media Center, is funded by USD alumnus Al Neuharth.
I left USD and moved to San Francisco in the spring of 1995. Once there, I worked as a freelance assistant to numerous advertising, fashion, and product photographers. In 1997 I became second assistant to a well known advertizing photographer. Within a few months and after the new first assistant left, I became first assistant. I worked with this photographer full-time for three years of amazing experience and travel.
In 2000, while still freelancing, I began producing for and assisting other advertising photographers. During this same period, I also worked with clients such as Mervyn’s California and Ziff Davis. After some dot-com and personal disasters in 2001, I took a reprieve for about a year.
South Dakota drew me back in 2002. I was looking for lower overhead and a little slower pace. My home town of Vermillion, location of the University of South Dakota, is a great central spot. In the past two years, I have built a studio and a local clientele for portrait, advertising, corporate, and journalism work.
