About mark schacter:
When I was a boy, my father gave me an old Kodak Reflex II camera dating from the late 1940s, and I have been passionate about photography ever since. One of the first photographs that I can recall taking was of a discarded dining room chair tilting at a crazy angle in a snow bank. From an early age, I had an appetite for imagery.
I am interested in abstraction; in the essential. But these do not come ready-made. Raw scenes – combinations of light, shade, shape and pattern that have the potential to be made into interesting images – are all around us. The trick is to recognize them – that’s all about the “photographer’s eye” – and know what to do with them.
And so it’s a thrill for me to find something “raw” in a landscape, or an urban or rural setting, and then through composition and post-production render it into an image that, through purity of idea and simplicity of composition, has emotional, intellectual and aesthetic impact.
I use a digital camera, and then make adjustments to my images using software. I have no patience for the empty debate about “real” film photography vs. “fake” digital photography. The issue is not whether a camera captures light on a piece of film or an electronic sensor. Photography is, and always has been, about manipulation. Film photographers alter the appearance of images through choice of film, and through lighting, developing and printing techniques. Digital photographers use different methods, but with similar goals in mind.
My own objective is to produce beautiful, arresting images that make me happy and that others will enjoy as well.
