About Kenneth Martin:
I am a self-taught photographer, working on weekends and vacations while holding a day job as a lab chemist. I have retired from that job, so I am now working full-time as a photographer. I had a one-man exhibition of my work at a gallery in Queens in 1989. I am represented for selected photographs by Visuals Unlimited, a stock agency in New Hampshire. All of my work up to now is personal work. My greatest influences are abstract and impressionist art. I like to explore relationships of geometric shapes and of harmonizing and contrasting colors of natural and constructed objects. I am also interested in historical places, archeology, old buildings and their styles, and industrial structures, especially abandoned and recycled buildings showing the changes our country has seen over the past century.
About one-third of my work is street photography in New York City (all 5 boroughs); the people, parks, streets, architecture, bridges, and especially the waterfront and shorelines. One of my on-going projects is showing the constant changes along the edges of the city, which I hope will be published as a book some day.
The rest of my work is travel photography, mostly in the United States, but also in Canada and Europe (Spain and Italy). I do a lot of off-road shooting of scenics, agriculture, historic places and small towns, rivers and natural areas. For example, I have been documenting the Erie Canal, the canal towns and their changes from industrial to recreational uses. There are decaying and regenerating towns; especially interesting are the vestiges of the 19th-century canal, noe often just a swampy ditch, and the old towns and industries bypassed by the widened 20th-century replacement.
