Assignment: Families and Siblings

Don't be bashful! If you want comments, give comments. You don't need to be an expert photographer to express your opinion about the work of others. You don't need to go into great depth. A simple remark about cropping, composition, color, subject matter, etc. can be of just as much help to a budding photographer as an in-depth critique.

Take a photo of a family or siblings together. How are you grouping them to tell a story? Is the photo candid or posed? You can utilize some of the other elements you have learned — for example, composition and lighting — so that you have a stronger image. However, if you have to compromise, do it with light and composition. What is important here is to unite the subjects in one way or another, making a strong statement about the relationship.

In this photograph of a family the goal was to capture a feeling, something more than just their likenesses. The photo was taken near sunset, taking advantage of the sweet light, as discussed in Chapter 3. The great feeling in the photo was achieved by directing them to run through the strip of sunlight several times to get the shot. By the time they had run through twice, they were laughing and looking at each other as if to say, “Isn’t this photographer crazy?” Taken at 1/125 second, f/2.8 at ISO 100.
