Don't be bashful! If you want comments, give comments. You don't need to be an expert photographer to express your opinion about the work of others. You don't need to go into great depth. A simple remark about cropping, composition, color, subject matter, etc. can be of just as much help to a budding photographer as an in-depth critique.
Start your own collection of visual references. Use one, or a combination of these references, to plan and execute a portrait shoot. Experiment with posing your subject and inspiring candid moments. Choose your favorite image, post it online at www.pwsbooks.com, and explain how the image relates to your visual references.
The visual reference for this portrait of my dad who is an artist, was inspired by some images I had of 16th-century Renaissance painters. My intention was to capture my dad in his “art mode.” Taken at ISO 200, f/4.0, 1/160 sec. with a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens.
